Nikon

Nikon – A brand we all know. As one of the top-tier photography and camera equipment companies, Nikon provides their customers with the ability to capture moments in time that are dear to their hearts and equips professional photographers with the capability to create astonishing photographs that adorn the cover of well-known magazines, capture historical moments in time and document the greatest moments in sports, music, politics and more.

I saw incredible potential in updating its current logo & visual identity with the goal of creating a symbol that captures Nikon’s Vision and enables the brand to navigate its visual landscape in a new, empowered manner so that they continue to stay in the minds of their loyal customer base while reaching new target audiences.

The idea

Sure, Nikon sells cameras, but a photo can be so much more than a mere click on a button. It can capture historical moments in time, that are known all over the world, or it can capture a historical moment in your own world: your first car, your first house, the family photograph with grandpa still with us… whatever it is, it feels amazing to capture these moments and be able to hold onto them.

That’s the thought and the driving idea behind my proposed logo redesign for Nikon. I wanted to bring the human element into the equation and create a symbol made out of two fingers forming a frame for a photograph. This way, the symbol carries a strong emotional tone while still being professional and highly memorable – a critical trait for any logo in these fast-paced times we are living in.

Colors & Type

The color choice for this design was simple – I kept them the very same colors the brand is currently using. For the type, I went for a more modern approach that builds a strong synergy with the designed symbol. For the logotype I worked with the Azo Sans Typeface. In order to give the type and symbol a coherent visual appearance to further strenghten the new design, I customized the “N’s” in Nikon, giving them the same curves as used in the symbol. This is a technique I really like to employ to create a well rounded design that really marries symbol and type into a visual unity.

To finish off the customization part of the design, I rounded off the sharp corners of the letters to make them more alike to the corners of the symbol – that might reduce the techy and serious look of the type, but it fits the emotional background of my design choices much better.

This is a portfolio project and is not an official redesign for the Nikon Brand, unfortunately. (Sigh)
